Windows xp defrag still fragmented

Would definitely agree with Carey though about using a different defrag app. There are plenty of others out there, free and paid for, which tend to do a better job and give more options that the built in on. The XP built in defrag is just "okay". In reply to A. User's post on October 6, What is that about and how can it be defragmented? In general, do fragmented files automatically 'fix themselves' over time? In reply to Shopper1's post on October 9, Auslogics is free and if you don't like it, uninstall it.

I don't think fragmented files will fix themselves over time. When you finish, you are unlikely to have any further questions about if an NTFS file system can become fragmented or not, no questions about what to do about it and no questions about how to do it.

Microsoft states in their TechNet discussions that NTFS is designed to resist fragmentation, but it is not immune to it, and that there is a benefit to properly defragmenting an NTFS volume. They go on to say that although NTFS uses more advanced algorithms in allocating clusters to files, it is not immune to fragmentation. It is true though, that it develops fragmentation to a lesser degree than other file systems due to its more sophisticated design, It is also possible and likely that the MFT Master File Table will become fragmented over time but to a lesser degree.

In addition to defragmenting files, the MFT should be defragmented as well. Files and the MFT can become fragmented. Any fragmentation will slow down retrieval and searching for files and folders. Therefore, the less fragmented you file system is, the better it will perform.

Some alleged "experts" will tell you that fragmentation is not possible with NTFS, but that is not true. NTFS is designed to resist fragmentation, but it is not immune to it. If fragmentation was not possible in NTFS it seems unlikely that Microsoft and other experts would expend so much effort discussing how to detect it, how to deal with it and how to prevent it.
